Why does marriage matter? It says “we’re family” in a way that no other word does. It is the ultimate expression of commitment and responsibility for the person you love. And there are many ways that only marriage can allow you protect and care for the people you love. |
But while these values are universal, thousands of gay and lesbian couples in Oregon are denied the right to marry. And that goes against another value Oregonians hold dear: treat others as you would like to be treated. And that is why marriage equality has Oregonians talking.
Starting the Conversation
Marriage Matters To Me is a grassroots campaign to get Oregonians talking to each other about marriage equality. The most important and influential conversations we have are with the people we know and care about. For the many Oregonians who believe that extending civil marriage to same sex couples is a matter of basic fairness and respect, Marriage Matters To Me is an easy and powerful way to start that conversation.
By creating and sharing a video with their families and friends about why marriage matters to them, people are acting on their basic values. And they are bringing us closer to the day that all Oregonians can share the values of love, commitment and protecting their families through civil marriage.
